How to choose the right door handle finish
for your interior — a practical guide.

Door handles are touched dozens of times a day, by every person who lives in or visits a space. They are also one of the last decisions most renovation projects make — chosen quickly, at the end of a long process, when fatigue has set in and the easiest option starts to look like the right one.

That's how most homes end up with door handles that don't actually suit the space. This guide walks through the decisions that matter, using the Kärcher Design range — including the new Torino R53 — as the reference point.

Start with your hardware palette, not the handle

Before choosing a finish, look at what's already fixed in the room: tap fittings, light switches, cabinet pulls, window frames. Most interiors already have an unintentional "hardware palette" — usually leaning warm (brass, bronze) or cool (chrome, stainless steel). Matching the door handle finish to this existing palette is the single highest-impact decision you can make, and it costs nothing extra.

· Warm palette (brass taps, warm timber, brushed gold accents) → Satin Brass or Cosmos Black with a warm timber Torino R53 inlay
· Cool palette (chrome fittings, marble, glass) → Chrome or Satin Stainless Steel, with a glass or carbon fibre inlay
· Mixed metals already in the room → Cosmos Black is the safest universal choice — it reads as neutral against both warm and cool palettes

Cosmos Black: why it's become the default recommendation

If you ask us for one finish that works in almost every context, it's Cosmos Black. The electrostatic powder-coat process gives it a matte, soft-touch surface that photographs well, resists fingerprints better than polished metal, and ages gracefully — there's no patina to manage, no risk of looking dated in five years the way some trend finishes can.

It's also the finish most architects in our trade network default to when a client hasn't expressed a strong preference. That's not a coincidence — Cosmos Black is genuinely the lowest-risk choice for resale value and long-term satisfaction.

When to choose an inlay handle instead

Standard finishes solve most situations. But there's a specific case where the Torino R53's interchangeable inlay system earns its place: when the door itself is a feature, not just an opening.

A solid timber entrance door, a glass-panelled study door, a leather-upholstered home office door — in these cases, a handle that simply matches the door's existing material does something a standard finish can't: it disappears into the surface rather than sitting on top of it as a separate decorative object. The hand reaches for what looks like a continuation of the door itself.

This is the use case the Torino R53 was designed around, and it's worth the marginal extra cost specifically for entrance doors, study doors, or any door that functions as a design statement rather than a utility.

Three questions to ask before you decide

· Will this door be touched by guests, not just family? — Entrance doors and powder room doors get more scrutiny. Spend the attention here first.
· Is the room warm-lit or cool-lit? — Warm LED lighting (2700K–3000K) makes brass and timber inlays glow; cool lighting (4000K+) suits chrome and stainless steel.
· Are you renovating in stages? — If other hardware decisions haven't been finalised yet, Cosmos Black is the safest finish to commit to now, since it won't conflict with whatever comes later.

Specifying with confidence

Every finish in the Kärcher Design range — including all twenty-two Torino R53 inlays — is certified to DIN EN 1906 Class 3 and 4, so durability is never the deciding factor between options. The decision genuinely comes down to how the handle relates to the room around it, which is why we always recommend viewing samples in your own lighting before committing to a specification across an entire home.

If you'd like to work through these decisions with our team directly, our Studio Select configurator lets you preview combinations before requesting a sample, and our showroom team can talk through your specific palette over a viewing appointment.
